Recently after rebooting my PC I got a BIOS error that the CPU was above temp. I checked and the cpu fan was completely caked with dust so there was very little airflow. I removed and cleaned the fan. In the process I bent one of the 4 legs that holds the fan on.
I applied some new thermal paste and put the heat sink/fan back on, but because one of the legs is now broken it isn't being pressed into the CPU with as much force as it used to.
Now every time I start my PC I still get the CPU above temp error. BIOS is reporting it as being at the maximum temperature of 206.6F every time I start it. I can't imagine the CPU could go from room temp to 206 in less than a minute, even without the heatsink on at all. Or can it?
So I'm definitely going to order a new fan/heatsink.... but what are the chances my CPU is already fried and I should order a new one as well? It's a i5 2500-k so not that cheap.
