[SOLVED] very weird behavior associated with bios (?)

I have a home-built computer using a Soyo SY-K7VME mother board and Windows 2000. I have used it in my workshop (for years), so I don't care if the OS is old. The computer started acting in a way that I would associate with the bios CMOS memory battery needing to be replaced. The post/boot process would occur erratically or not at all, or it would "try" to start but then shut off. I replaced the battery (with 3 different new batteries), cleared and refreshed the CMOS memory as per the manual each time, and checked the voltages in the power supply--all were okay. The problem persisted. I was ready to throw out the mother board. By chance, I unplugged the computer, then re plugged it in the AC outlet after it had sat for an hour or so. Suddenly it worked. If I just shut the computer down and try to restart it, the original symptoms return. If I unplug the computer from the AC power, or if I turn off the power at the power supply, for more than an hour it does boot okay. When it does boot, it runs fine. The shut-down-for-an-hour maneuver allows the computer to be functional, but I am wondering what the heck is going on. My solution seems temporary at best. Any thoughts appreciated.
