Can constant/frequent shutting down/resetting damage your hardware

I've had to do this a couple dozen times in the last week and a half. Most recently, I had a problem when I shut down, and couldn't start back up- despite the blue light indicating the monitor was getting a signal. The second time I waited a full 20 minutes, but nothing ever appeared on the screen. It may have had something to do with the two external hard drives I plugged in, it happened both times when I had them plugged into two USB 3.0 ports, since disconnecting them, it starting up properly again.

I would never do this unless I had to, I've had problems in which there was no other way to shut down, other than using the power button the front of my computer, or the reset button. I wonder if improper shutting down/resetting can cause power surges etc, say that could blow a transistor in one of the RAM DIMM's, or worse, the CPU (I don't think it's the CPU) but there were two sticks of ram that had to be replaced about a year ago. I went from 64 to 32gigs, two DIMMS of 16 gigs each were removed, two of them work, two of them don't.
