Asus Zenbook UX301LAA, Intel i5 mobile Haswell CPU, SSD, 8GB DDR3 RAM, a few years old
Anyone following my saga may be getting bored by now but I have a new issue. Recall I replaced a failed SSD and the unit ran great for a week, now I am getting random crashes to black and mostly failure to start up. This seems like a pure power issue of some sort, which I am guessing is a failing mobo. I have taken the thing apart numerous times to disconnect the battery, try booting just on AC or battery, and once in awhile it starts and runs great, but them crashes to black again.
Main symptom whilst trying to start is that the power LED comes on for about 5 seconds, then just goes off, no going into BIOS, no messages, no activity whatsoever. No indication otherwise of any activity. Then randomly it will "take" and start up entirely normal. The battery is fine and the power supply LED indicator is green (full), goes orange while the failed start is occurring, then goes back green after the laptop power LED turns off.
This is a really nice notebook and is in good shape so it would be worth a bit to me to get it fixed. I see several online outfits that offer one price mobo refurb but have no experience. Do any of these guys do a good job with these sorts of repairs?
