Sound has stopped working

I had one cable of a 5.1 speaker system plugged into the rear green hole. It was outputting sound perfectly fine for a few days. I then plugged in the orange and black cables in the board and the sound stopped working. All the motherboard outputs is a high pitch squeaking sound.

It isn't the speakers causing this problem as I can play sound out of my iPod and Surface. I tried updating all the drivers, doing a system restore and plugging in headphones but it hasn't worked. The volume mixer shows sound output to the speakers but the high pitch sound still occurs.

The computer has previously worked perfectly with all the cables plugged into the motherboard and output sound properly.

I don't know what the problem could be and have no idea what to do next. Is there any way to fix this?

System Information:
Motherboard: Biostar TA970
CPU: AMD FX-3600
OS: Windows 8.1
GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7790
Speakers: Logitech z506

I can post more information if needed, but I think that will do.
