Hi :)
Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong forum, my symptoms are Windows 7 related, but I wanted to see if my hunch was right and whether I've been an idiot and bought something that's not compatible, or perhaps showing symptoms that my motherboard is on the fritz.
I decided to get an SSD a few months back, and when I installed it I thankfully opted to make it a second boot disc, rather than removing windows from my old HDD (otherwise I'd be in even more of a pickle!)
Once I had installed Windows 7 on the new SSD boot, I had some troubles updating; it would fail to update properly on reboot, reaching the Windows logo screen and black-screening / immediately rebooting, and I'd have to enter Safe Mode and then go back to an earlier restore point, and try again - finally I managed to fully update it by applying the updates with the same release date, one install at a time (something which took a while given how many updates and releases dates there were).
Anyway, I updated again today, and the same thing happened, only this time I was unable to install the update, and so decided to do a full format and fresh install, hoping it was a dodgy windows install that was causing the problem.
Everything went fine in the format and install, up until the first reboot; at the point where windows started editing the registry on the windows logo screen, the same old issue of the computer black-screening / immediate rebooting occurred, which the install process didn't seem to like to much.
So, I'm left wondering if my now rather aged motherboard just isn't compatible with the more modern SSD.
Here are my specs:
On ASUS' website, it lists the storage specs as
Intel® ICH10R controller :
6 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), blue
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Marvell® PCIe 9128 controller : *1
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray
I've plugged the SSD into one of the Intel controllers after reading elsewhere that SSD doesn't play too well with the Marvell controller.
The SSD is sitting in a General 2.5" SSD to 3.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive HDD Adapter CADDY TRAY CAGE Hot Swap Plug
Crucial's website says it is compatible.. but I'm wondering if I've made a mess of something, or they're wrong, or perhaps there's something else wrong with my motherboard?
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance! :)
