Hello All,
A while since I roamed into this corner of the internet, I hope it is as friendly as it ever was!
I Built a PC in mid 2012, these were the basics that I put together:
Shuttle SH61R4 XPC
i3 2120
4 Gb DDR3 1066 Memory (single stick)
Samsung 120 Gb SSHD Boot disk
Western Digital 500gb conventional HDD for storage
Windows 7 32 bit OS
This all fitted together and worked really well, barring the on board audio which was always crackly and horrible. I attempted to sort that out with a PCI Express sound card which didn't help. This mat have been settings and I never got to the bottom of it as I got hold of a blue tooth sound bar which had far better sound quality.
The system has been stable, quiet and perfect for all I asked of it until this summer.
I have now got into video and needed a faster PC to render files.
Therefore, after much research I purchased an i5 3550 chip and an additional 4 Gb DDR3 RAM, which on this occasion is 1333.
I attempted the upgrade yesterday and have had no success, I suspect motherboard issues (either hardware or BIOS) but would like your opinions if I may:
RAM.
8 Gb-Placed new stick of RAM in second slot. No Post, boot.
8 Gb-swapped RAM between Slots. No Post No Boot.
4 Gb- Placed new stick of RAM in first slot. System Starts
4 Gb- Placed new stick of RAM in second slot. No Post No boot.
4 GB- Placed old stick of RAM in second slot. No Post No boot
4 Gb- Placed old stick of RAM in first slot. System Starts (back in original configuration)
Conclusion, Second RAM slot not functioning.
CPU.
Description on chip: Core i5 3550, SR0P0 3.3Ghz, L212B271
Compatibility list: Shuttle Global - SH61R4
Chip information: ARK | Intel® Core⢠i5-3550 Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz)
Swapped to new CPU,
No POST, no Boot
Disconnect everything except single stick of proved functioning RAM
No POST, no boot.
Conclusion, BIOS version needs updating to SH61R000.201. However, unsure as BIOS boot screen simply refers to BIOS being Ver 1, not described as all those listed.
So, change back to original CPU. I have lost 2 hours, computer boots and functions exactly as before!
Questions:
1. RAM slot issues, common, likely, ever been heard of?
2. BIOS Flash, are they incremental, would I be best going for the most recent version or the one recommended on the CPU list?
3. Anything I have missed or you think I should try?
Thanks for bearing with me.
All the best,
Barney.
