updating BIOS on ASUS M2A-VM

$

I'm planning to do a major reinstall next month and currently, I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x86 on my computer. My full specifications are as follows:

- ASUS M2A-VM motherboard
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Dual Core CPU (codename "Windsor") at 2.2GHz
- 6GB DDR2 PC2-5300 memory
- Integrated ATI Radeon X1250 graphics
- BIOS: Pheonix Technologies LTD BIOS, Asus M2A-VM ACPI BIOS Revision 0302, dated 03/07/2007

I want to know how can I safely update my BIOS to the latest version? The reason that I'm asking this is that is I'm planning to upgrade into a 64-bit version of Windows 7.

I found out from this link here (ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Forum- windows 7 64 bit on asus m2a-vm) that one user has the same motherboard and he was able to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7 - without any problems.

However, he pointed out that there were issues with the installation and he suggests the following:

1) Update the BIOS to the latest version (if your motherboard's version is not 2302).
2) Clear the RTC RAM by changing the jumpers in the motherboard.
3) Change all drive settings in the BIOS.

What other suggestions can you advise me in this case? Should I really backup my data before updating the BIOS?

Corsair XMS2 - 2x2GB
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 / 3 GHz
eVGA GeForce GTX 260

win xp sp3

i want to replace a cpu fan from intel. it is attached with a thermal pad.

-i have another intel fan that looks very similar to the intel fan currently installed, but i am not sure which cpu/motherboard it is from. how do i make sure if the fan is suitable?

-can i use isopropyl (Isopropyl alcohol 99.8%, 100ml) to remove and clean the thermal parts?

-i heard that the thermal pad is quite hard hard to remove, it is stuck to the cpu. what is the best method to remove it?

-after i cleaned the cpu, how long do i need to dry it? i want to place another cpu fan with a thermal pad.

i recently took out my ram and such and dusted my internals but i have a problem

Does this this sound like a bad mobo?

I'm having a hard time determining whether it's hardware or software that's wrecking my computer. Here are my symptoms.

-Computer sometimes reset when using front USB
-Hard disk shoots to 100% and won't go down
-Freezes on start up
-Browser stops loading the page
-Browser sometimes duplicates window when I try to close it

The problems started after a fresh install of Windows 8. I thought maybe it was malware but a Kaspersky scan didn't find anything. One day it wouldn't log in at all so I did a computer Refresh and the problems came right back.

Any suggestions for what/how I should start testing to see what's wrong?

CPU speed and multiplier drops by 50%

I have been experience some performance issues with my rig while under load and when I looked into why I immediately found that my CPU is cutting speed by 50% randomly while gaming and during stress tests.

I have done enough research to see that cool and quiet is disabled, smart fan disabled, and my windows power options are set to high performance (there was no option for the processor). Temps ranging from 38c~45c. I also loaded default settings in the bios, turned off all and any overclocking and still had the problem.

Is there something I am missing? I've tried googling the issue and all I get is the same old power options and cool and quiet advice. This is a relatively fresh install of windows (less than two months old). I do not recall seeing this issue prior. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Laptop Motherboard Partially Fried? Dell Inspiron N5010

$

Hello. Please bare with me and read this all here if you are experienced. I have a DELL Inspiron N5010 but I physically broke the WXGA LCD panel. I bought another but while installing it I left the battery in (not too bright I know). It sparked a little when connecting it to the main board and I also managed to damage the delicate pins. I just used the VGA output (which of course caused the 8 beeps each time with no lcd installed) but the laptop now had the following problems:
a) internal network adapter was dead. (i plugged in a USB one and it works)
b) a few days later the laptop would not work with the battery plugged in. That is, it will ONLY work if the AC is plugged in and the battery is out. Once the battery goes in, it dies.
So question 1: Do you think part of the board was fried or somehow just the network adapter?
2: Why would the battery do this?
I bought a new cable for the LCD and it worked just fine... until the wire wore because I didn't bother to route it correctly and a couple of the tiny wires became exposed. It made a burning smell lol. The LCD was again dead. I bought a new cable and I got backlight but no display (I tried all the settings for display options as far as I know). I bought ANOTHER LCD cable to make sure that wasn't a bad one and it does the same thing (backlight but no signal or display). I CAN still use the VGA output to my TV or a desktop monitor.
So question 3: Did the wire short in the LCD cable kill my new LCD panel or once again part of the motherboard or video card? (It's NOT the cable).
I should also mention that everything else including all ports work fine. I also ran the DELL diagnostics and came up with nothing. I took the HDD out and put it in another Dell (same model) and the screen was fine so it's not a windows issue (?)
Thanks for any help!!

press play on game and windows locks up

Hi,
Im new here, i built my first cpu a week a go. everything was running fine, then i went to play my game SWTOR i hit the play button and windows froze on me. The first thing i did was to check and see how much ram my sytem was reconizing... at that point it was only reconizing 256m. I have 16gigs of ddr3 1600 dual channel kingston hyper x. So after hours spent running virus programs and such in safe mode i finally got it to where it was reconzing my ram again. Now the thing is it still freezes up when hitting play on the game. The only thing i had done different that day was install black ops 2 and it installed its version of direct x. So im not sure what is going on. i have tested all the ram a stick at a time, have tested the video card as i have a spare. both are good. and none of this happens when i open anyother programs. unfortunately right now i cant test it on other games cause i put the computer back to earlier state. any help on this would be greatly appreciated! Thankyou in advanced. also as of now im reinstalling my game i play. maybe it was corrupted and when i rebboted earlier system did a scan disk check and found bad sectors so it fixed them. if reinstalling game doesnt work would reinstalling direct x might help since it might have became corrupted? or might it be a bigger problem like the motherboard?

Computer freeze or restart issue

Hello, I am hoping you guys can give me a few pointers.

I have a problem that my computer automatically either completely freezes, or simply restarts on it's own volition. When it freezes, all the hardware keeps running (fans etc) for what seems to be an indefinite time. The restart appears just as if the power is unplugged. It's a very "hard" shutdown, and 2-3 seconds later it starts booting up again.

This can happen at any time, and the longest I've been able to keep the computer up and running is approximately 15 minutes. Sometimes it also happens before POST completion.

I've tried multiple OS versions, and it happens in all of them. (That was before it started happening pre-POST, obviously.)

The first time it happened was when I upgraded from Win7 to Win8. However, as said above, this clearly isn't an OS issue.

What I have done so far

1. I've re-stalled various OS, windows and linux versions.
2. I've run through Prime95, no issues detected
3. I've run through Memtest, no issues detected
4. I've run through 3DMark, completed just fine.

I have also disconnected virtually all hardware. The computer now only has 1 harddrive + gfx card attached to remove any possible shorting issues, and it still happens.

The computer has a 750W PSU, so it also shouldn't be a power shortage issue with this little hardware in it.

The computer is water cooled, and the CPU temperature has never been above 40C, so it ought not be any overheating issues.

My ideas

I am, at this point, guessing that it's either a motherboard or CPU issue. Before I start ordering new hardware, I'm hoping for a second opinion from you guys.

The memtest results makes me believe the RAM is just fine, and the prime95 test makes me think the CPU is also ok. Leaving me with mobo.

Should I just order a new mobo, or could there be something else?

Edit

I should point out that the event logger in Windows does not record anything, and the Q-Code on the ASUS motherboard does not show any errors.

HP mobo shorted?

Hi. I have a HP s5000 computer with a 513426-001 mobo. This is a M2N68-LA mobo. It got wet because a glass of water spilled on the desk and water migrated down to the tower. I didnt notice and turned it on and it didnt. PSU green light was blinking. Thougt it was a bad PSU. Tried with anothed good PSU and did the same thing. Both PSU were protecting themselves. I noticed that in the ATX 12V connector on the board there is a short. As soon as I disconnect the cable comming from the PSU unit , PSU turns on.
Is there any way to fix the component that is causing a short at the ATX 12V connector? There are no signs of swollen capacitors. Maybe a bad transistor? Any way to troubleshoot it and find out which component is bad? Thanks.

Display problems with HP G62-b28SA

Hi
I have a G62-b28SA laptop. It boots up as normal but the screen stays blank. I trid disconnecting the hard drive then plugging it back in, and that solved it. Then I shut it down and tried booting it back up and still had the same problrm. So then I disconnected the battery and booted it up with just the av power suply plugged in and then again it botted up as nomal. Then I shut it down reconnected the battery and same problem again. I repeated the same steps again and now nothing it still has a blank screen but it sounds to be booting up as normal. Any ideas on what the problem is?
Thank you.

Problems after replacing motherboard HP Pavilion laptop - Vista

HP diagnosed a failing motherboard and advised me to look on the internet for a replacement as they do not have one. I found only two sources both China. My replacement works in every way except the WAN would not start and audio is silent. HP.com will not detect missing drivers as my serial number is now blank. When I checked the bios settings during the boot, my speaker works. My modem doesn't work, but I don't need it. I was thinking that if I could fix the product info in the bios that I could get replacement drivers from HP. Any ideas to recover the WAN and sound?

assus board problem.. f2a85-m

Once in few days(3-5), pc crash no BSOD no memory dump, I think I finally understand why, just want to make sure.

I am not an overclock-er type(Dont like to play with voltage setting, etc.. by myself).

But since I have a turbo mode cpu(a10-5800K), I do want to take the maximum of it. (4300GHZ).

In this mobo uefi there are few options to boost gpu: auto\turbo\extreme\maual.
I set it to turbo(at the beginning), thinking that the rest is auto done..

But now I understand that in order to make it really auto overclock, the the switch GPU "turbo boost" on the mobo(physically), must be turned on?
and if the switch is turned off(like I used to have), the turbo\extreme options in the uefi can cause a big mess!

If I am right(and that is part of my question) why when the GPU "turbo boost" switch is turned off the turbo\extreme options are even available in the bios? As I see it the only 2 options should be there, are: auto/manual.
At least one can expect a clear explantion for this GPU "turbo boost" switch role from Asus, in my opinion Asus failed here..

I am not 100% sure that this was the reason for my pc halt( I need more time for testing), 7 days for now, no halt.

so am I right, and this was the problem?

I've found lots of great posts on here that reference the error light codes for a Dell Optiplex GX260

(Manuals*and Documents for OptiPlex GX260 | Dell US)

Unfortunately, the documentation for this model no longer exists at the Dell web site.

Does anyone still have this document, or a reference for the error codes the 4 lights on the back of the tower generate?

What I get is:
A- Amber
B- Amber
C- Green
D- Green

No video, No POST beeps, the hard drive and fans spin up briefly then go back off (the cycle repeats once). Front panel power light is green then amber.

Thank you...

Toshiba Satellite laptop freezes on start up

My laptop sometimes freezes right after i turn the power on and i don't know the reason for this. It freezes in the moment when loading the BIOS screen. Then i have to turn off the power and disconnect the power cable and wait 10-15 minutes. After this it loads normally.

My boot order is to boot first from cd drive and then from hard disk. When this freezing happen it can't even boot the Hiren's BootCD. I can hear how the cd drive is turning but nothing more happens. That is way i think it is a problem with the bios not with the hard disk.

Is there any way to test if the bios is functioning properly? I don't know if this occasional freezing are not symptoms of a future bigger failure.
